(RSF/IFEX) – According to RSF, on 14 March 1998, Awad Awad, a Palestinian
photo-journalist with Agence France-Press, was hit by two rubber-coated
metal bullets while he was covering confrontations between protesters and
Tsahal (the Israeli Army) soldiers in Dura (on the West Bank).
Background Information
On 13 March 1998, nine journalists were injured in Hebron (West Bank) by
rubber-coated metal bullets while they were covering a Palestinian
demonstration. The journalists present at that demonstration immediately
accused the Israeli army of having intentionally fired on them (for
information on this case see IFEX alert of 17 March 1998).
RSF notes that violence against journalists has been increasing in the last
two years, in spite of the Israeli Army’s commitments to respect the
professional integrity of journalists.
