(RSF/IFEX) – According to RSF, on 27 February 1998, several journalists of
Arabic origin, covering the trial of French writer Roger Garaudy were
violently attacked by militants presumed to belong to Betar, the extremist
organization of Jewish youth (for information on the trial of Garaudy see
IFEX alert dated 22 January 1998). Abdallah Hassan, the Paris correspondent
for the Egyptian agency MENA suffered a broken tooth, and Sayyed Hamdi,
correspondent for Saudi television, was severely bruised. Two journalists
with Iranian radio-television were also said to have been attacked at the
exit of the Paris Courthouse.
