(CPJ/IFEX) – Independent Liberian radio station, Star Radio, resumed
broadcasting on 6 February 1998 after government authorities lifted a ban
imposed on 7 January.
**Updates IFEX action alert dated 27 January 1998**
Background Information
On 7 January 1998, the Liberian Ministry of Mail and Telecommunications
closed Star Radio, an independent news and information
station run by the Swiss-based non-government organization Fondation
Hirondelle. Star Radio, which began broadcasting on 15 July 1997 under the
Liberian interim government, was accused of illegally using two wavelengths,
even though the Ministries of Planning, Foreign Affairs and Information
approved the setting up of the radio.
