(MISA/IFEX) – On 4 October 1997, a journalist working for the
state-run Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA) was run over by a police
vehicle, killing him instantly. Peterkings Nkoma, 24, was killed
along the Katima Mulilo-Rundu main road in northern Namibia where
he worked as a regional reporter.
The officer driving the police vehicle had attempted to cover up
the incident, but later admitted to killing Nkoma. After pressure
from local residents, the police agreed to conduct a thorough
investigation. Local residents suspected that Nkoma had been
murdered. Fresh investigations show that Nkoma was run over by a
vehicle.
In 1995, Nkoma joined NANSO where he was enrolled for a course in
journalism. In 1996, he freelanced for the state-run Namibian
Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). The same year, he was employed by
NANSO as a media officer until March 1997 when he joined the
Namibian Press Agency.
