(RSF/IFEX) – Foday Fofana, journalist with the weekly
“L’Independant”, was arrested on 13 October 1997 at the Alpha
Yaya military camp in Conakry. Fofana had gone there to meet with
the camp’s number two man, associate commander Piou, in regard to
reports that the latter was behind several assaults against a
civilian. As soon as Fofana stated the reason for his visit, he
was charged with “gathering information on behalf of a foreign
power”. Fofana was taken initially to National Security in
Conakry and then to police headquarters, where he was held for
one month. Afterwards, Fofana was transferred to the central
detention house.
Other charges later brought against Fofana are “attempting to
threaten the security of the State”, “falsehood and use of
deception”, and “attempting to usurp in name and deed”. Fofana is
currently awaiting trial.
