(NDIMA/IFEX) – Njehu Gatabaki, publisher of the Nairobi weekly
magazine “Finance”, was assaulted and abducted on 5 December
1997. A former member of Parliament, Gatabaki was kidnapped at
his parent’s home in the Githunguri Kiambu district of central
Kenya by people believed to be security men. The men showed up in
six vehicles that did not bear registered licence plates. The
vehicles reportedly drove into the compound of Gatabaki’s parents
and left with the journalist after a struggle that occurred when
he disobeyed orders by his abductors to get out of his vehicle
after they had blocked his way. Gatabaki was struck several times
and the windows of his vehicle were smashed. Police have said
that they are investigating the incident.
Gatabaki is contesting a parliamentary seat in Githunguri on the
recently registered Safina party ticket.
