weekly “La Tribune” was censored on 10 November 1997. Although no
official explanation was given for this measure, it appears to be
related to the publication, in the preceding issue of the weekly,
of an editorial critical of the policies of President Maaouya
Ould Sid Ahmed Taya.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
permits the Ministry of the Interior to censor any newspaper
arbitrarily and without explanation
censor “La Tribune” is lifted as soon as possible
