(RSF/IFEX) – Algerian authorities stripped the accreditation of one of the
four journalists who work for the Algiers bureau of the Agence France
Presse (AFP) news agency. According to RSF’s information, on 25 September
1997, the journalist was called in by a Foreign Affairs Ministry official
and informed that his accreditation as a foreign correspondent, issued at
the beginning of 1997, was being withdrawn. The duration is unknown and the
reasons for the decision were not given. After a protest from AFP
management, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said that AFP had already been
warned about its coverage of the violence in Algeria, and that there had
been a “repeat offence.” The journalist is, therefore, left unable to
practise his profession.
AFP is the last Western news agency in Algeria.
