In Tiraspol, the capital of Transdniestrie, in the middle of the
night of 22 June 1995, members of the National Ministry of
Security (MNS) searched the offices of the cable television
association TV Asket, which is registered with Moldavia’s
Ministry of Justice in Kichinev. The MNS confiscated video
cassettes, cut the telephone lines, and destroyed some of their
equipment.
Considered to have sympathies with the Russian 14th Army
stationed in Transdniestrie, TV Asket has been the object of
numerous pressures from the authorities in Tiraspol. Their
transmissions have been scrambled for three months at the
initiative of Boris Nicolaevitch Akoulov, the president of the
committee for press and radio-television of the self-proclaimed
Republic of Transdniestrie. This decision was made after the
broadcast of an interview with Colonel Mikhaol Bergman, the
right-hand man of General Alexandre Lebed, commander of the 14th
Army, who accused the authorities in Tiraspol of corruption. The
bank accounts of TV Asket have been blocked, but the intervention
of General Lebed has until now prevented these assets from being
seized.
