11 March 1995 will mark the third anniversary of the death of
Latino journalist Manuel de Dios Unanue who was gunned down in
Queens, New York on orders of the Colombian Cali drug cartel. His
family and colleagues have appealed to local authorities to
designate the street where he was killed Manuel de Dios de
Unanue, but local officials have refused to do so. Unanue was a
muckracking journalist who worked for New York Spanish-language
newspapers and magazines. He focused on local corruption and
fought hard against drug traffickers in his neighbourhood.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has written to New
York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani requesting that he endorse a
proposal by local journalists and community leaders that the
section of 83rd Street, between Baxter and Roosevelt Avenues, in
the Borough of Queens, be designated Manuel de Dios Unanue
Street.
Recommended Action
Please write to Mayor Giuliani:
Baxter and Roosevelt Avenues, in the Borough of Queens, be
designated Manuel de Dios Unanue Street.
Appeals To
The Honorable Rudolph W. Giuliani
Mayor of New York City
New York, N.Y.
