On 14 June 1996, court proceedings will begin in Zagreb against
Viktor Ivancic, editor-in-chief of the satirical weekly “Feral
Tribune” and Marinko Culic, a journalist with the newspaper. The
two are charged with making “defamatory and insulting statements”
about President Franjo Tudjman. If convicted, they could face
imprisonment.
Meanwhile, 25 leading Croatian independent journalists agreed to
sign their names to the article written by Culic that led to the
charges. The article was originally published in the 29 April
edition of the “Feral Tribune” and subsequently re-published in
the current issue under the names of the 25 journalists.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
proceed against these journalists is a direct attack on press
freedom and contravenes internationally recognised principles
