On 5 June 1996, Bruce Asemota, a reporter for the independent
“Daily Observer”, fled The Gambia. He was arrested at the border
town of Andali by officials of the Gambian National Intelligence
Agency (NIA) and was beaten; he now sustains an injury to his
left leg. He was held overnight, but the following day managed to
escape with some other passengers on the way to Dakar, Senegal.
However, he had to leave his bag with all his papers and
documentation at the border.
