**Updates IFEX alert dated 12 June 1996**
On 13 June 1996, psychiatrist and human rights activist Dr. Eyad
Sarraj was ordered by the Palestinian State Security Court in
Gaza to remain in detention for 15 more days, on grounds that he
allegedly assaulted a police officer while in custody. Neither
Sarraj’s family nor his attorney, Dr. Raji Sourani, were present,
as they were not informed in advance of his court appearance.
Later that day, Sarraj was taken, with his lawyer present, to a
Civil Court in Gaza and charged with dealing illegal drugs.
During the hearing, Sarraj repeated the allegation, made earlier
in a letter smuggled from his jail cell, that he had been beaten
while in detention. The Civil Court judge ordered that Sarraj be
released on bail; however, he remains in prison because of the
State Security Court order
