**Updates IFEX alert dated 1 July 1996**
RSF is concerned at an underground group’s continued threats
against journalists and media outlets. On 3 July 1996, the group
Fuerza Nacionalista Roberto D’Aubuisson (named after the late
founder of the governing National Republican Alliance, or ARENA,
party) released a statement in which it threatened the Cable News
Network (CNN), the evening paper “Diario Latino”, Channel Twelve
(Canal Doce) television, Radio Sonora and Radio YSKL. The group
threatened to take action against national media outlets and
correspondents of foreign media, saying they give negative
coverage of the government and the privatization process it has
undertaken.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to Salvadoran authorities:
journalists’ ability to freely exercise their profession
journalists, and asking that an investigation be conducted to
identify those responsible
