On 20 July 1996, Thierry Jonard, a correspondent for the French-
language Radio-Television Belgium (RTBF), and recording
technician Juan Ozuna were assaulted by a group of armed men
while they were filming a documentary in the region of Venustiano
Carranza, in the state of Chiapas. The two were wounded in the
head and the face. They were taking footage of the local
population when a group of approximately forty armed men
assaulted them, stealing two cameras and a battery in the
process. According to the journalists, a military post was
stationed nearby; however, the soldiers who witnessed the
incident failed to intervene. A few hours later, the journalists
went to San Cristobal de las Casas to report the assault.
