The journalists were covering a demonstration against a provincial commissioner over alleged interference in the ruling party’s nominations. A number of people were injured when police broke up the demonstration.
The officers, under the command of the local area police boss, Asheja Litapalia, frog-marched journalists Beauttah Omanga, of the Nation Media Group, Angwenyi Gichana, of “The People” newspaper, and cameraman Ken Momanyi from the area where the fighting between the police and the demonstrators took place to the local police station.
The officers removed the tape from the video camera and retained it. Litapalia accused the journalists of covering an illegal gathering before seeking clearance.
