(RSF/IFEX) – The antenna of the community radio station RJM (radio juive de Marseille) was vandalised on 30 December 2002, at around 6:00 p.m. (local time). The station was only able to resume its broadcasts at 2:00 p.m. the next day. The Marseille Criminal Investigation Department’s crime squad has been put in charge of the investigation.
RSF condemns this act of sabotage and is concerned by the fresh upsurge of attacks against community radio stations in France.
Located on the hills of Marseille, the 54-metre antenna fell after one of the metal cables supporting the pylon was split. Station president Jean-Jacques Zenou expressed “serious concern” over the incident. One of the station’s electric cables was previously severed in the fall of 2001. RJM is a Jewish community radio station that also broadcasts information from the Armenian and Corsican communities on its airwaves. Recognised for its openness, the station also jointly produces programmes with Radio Gazelle, a North African community radio station.
RSF recalls that on the night of 6 December 2002, individuals broke the windows and front door of the community radio station Radio Méditerranée’s Paris offices.
