(WiPC/IFEX) – The WiPC of International PEN welcomes the release of Lesley McCulloch on 9 February 2003.
British academic and writer McCulloch was released from jail in Indonesia following the expiry of her five-month custodial sentence. She is reportedly planning to return to her post at the University of Tasmania, where she will resume research concerned with the Indonesian province of Aceh.
Background Information
On 30 December 2002, an Indonesian court found McCulloch and her American colleague, health worker Joy Lee Sadler, to have acted in violation of visa regulations. The two women were sentenced to five and four months’ imprisonment, respectively. Having already served three months in jail on remand, Sadler was released in mid-January upon the expiry of her sentence.
