(IFJ/IFEX) – In a letter to the Assam governor, retired lieutenant general Ajai Singh, the IFJ expressed great concern over the abduction and alleged death of journalist Indra Mohan Hakasam, a local correspondent from Goalpara, Assam, working for “Amar Assam”, an Assamese daily published in the city of Guwahati.
According to IFJ’s information, Doleng Rava and Sanjib Rava, leaders of the United Liberation Force of Assam (ULFA), an outlawed militant group active in Assam, abducted Hakasam from his house on the evening of 24 June 2003.
According to IFJ’s information, local newspapers have recently reported that the ultra militant group has killed Hakasam. Hakasam is married and has two young children. His family has not been provided with proof of his alleged death by the authorities.
The IFJ supports the Journalists Union of Assam (JUA) in its announcement of a one-day sit-in strike at the premises of the Guwahati Press Club on 21 November to press for an investigation into Hakasam’s case.
The IFJ expressed concern over the increasing violence against journalists in India. The organisation urged the government of India to remember the vital importance of a free press in a democracy and to do everything necessary to ensure that press freedom is not compromised.
