(RSF/IFEX) – A Khulna police officer, Mofazzal Hossain, was arrested on 16 February 2005 for suspected collusion with armed Maoist militants who have carried out a number of bombings, including the recent attack on the Khulna Press Club.
On 14 February, a police unit from the capital, Dhaka, surprised the officer in the company of an individual by the name of Hasan, a known member of the armed group. Hasan used the police officer’s gun to cover his escape but was later arrested. Hossain was suspended from duty, recalled to Dhaka and arrested.
This new arrest follows revelations by an individual known as Swadhin, an armed militant recently arrested in Khulna, who reportedly named those responsible for separate bomb attacks on journalists Humayun Kabir Balu, Sheikh Belaluddin Hamed and Dip Azad.
