(WAN/IFEX) – In a 24 February 2005 letter to President Vladimir Putin, WAN and the World Editors Forum (WEF) expressed serious concern at an assault on journalist Sergei Lyubimov.
According to reports, Lyubimov, a reporter with the economic daily “Bogatei”, was attacked on the evening of 19 February at the entrance to his apartment in the city of Saratov. One of the assailants beat him with a metal pipe before taking a package containing documents and a notebook, while leaving his wallet and mobile phone. Lyubimov was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery and was afterwards listed as being in a stable condition.
WAN and WEF expressed concern that Lyubimov may have been attacked for his journalism activities. He had recently written stories about corruption, in areas ranging from local privatisation projects to corruption among local police officials, and violations of human rights.
