(CJFE/IFEX) – Canadian journalist Kathleen Kenna, the “Toronto Star” reporter injured in a hand grenade attack in Afghanistan on 4 March 2002, is recovering at a United States (U.S.) military hospital in Germany.
According to the newspaper, her condition remains serious. Kenna was on a respirator until 11 March and was heavily sedated. She was able to talk briefly with family members who are at the hospital with her.
Kenna is resting in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Landstul, located next to the U.S. base at Ramstein.
Following the 4 March attack, Kenna was taken by helicopter to a hospital at Bagram, outside Kabul, and then to Uzbekistan. From there, she was transferred to a medical facility at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) base in southern Turkey before finally arriving in Germany. In that time, she underwent three extensive operations.
The “Toronto Star” reports that, once her condition allows, Kenna will be transferred to a Canadian hospital.
