(CEHURDES/IFEX) – Late in the evening on 19 May 2005, Maoist insurgents seized transmission equipment from Ghodaghodi FM radio station, which is based in Attariya, in the western district of Kailali. Ghodaghodi is the only radio station operating in this region.
According to station officials, a group of armed rebels entered the FM station’s offices and forced the security guard to show them the main transmission room. They later fled with the transmission equipment.
This is the first time that the Maoists have targeted the station, which was launched by a non-governmental organisation.
CEHURDES condemns the Maoists’ action and urges the rebels to return the equipment as soon as possible. The organisation further calls on the rebels to refrain from targeting the media and to allow them to work without fear and intimidation.
