(IJC/IFEX) – The following is a 10 March 2006 joint statement by the IJC and other organisations:
DECLARATION
Chisinau, 10 March 2006
The Independent Journalism Center, the Committee for Freedom of the Press, the Association of Independent Press, the “Acces-Info” Center, the Association of Broadcast Media (APEL), and the Journalists’ Union of Moldova express their concern over the declarations of Vasile Ursu, the Interim Mayor of Chisinau, about the limitation of journalists’ access to the meetings of Chisinau City Council. These declarations were made in response to articles that appeared in the mass media, criticising the activities of the capital’s public administration.
We would like to remind authorities’ representatives that access to official information is an inalienable right of every person. We regret that Chisinau City Hall is moving away from the norms of transparency and openness, ignoring the principles of democratic societies, contrary to the recommendations of the Council of Europe, constitutional norms, and provisions of the Law on Access to Information.
