(AFMF/IFEX) – On 14 March 2006, Kenya Television Network (KTN) cameraman Eustace Kathurima was the latest victim of the on-going police harassment of Standard Group journalists.
Kathurima said that four men who identified themselves as police officers detained him as he was on his way to his Balozi Estate house in Nairobi. After he identified himself, the officers told him that they had been instructed to investigate him on allegations of having fraudulently obtained three land title deeds, according to Kathurima.
“They asked me why I was involved in fraud and claimed that I have been selling land”, said Kathurima.
The police handcuffed him and led him to his house, where they conducted a search and ordered Kathurima to switch on his computer. After briefly browsing through the contents of the computer, the man who appeared to be in charge apologised to Kathurima and told him that they might have mistaken him for somebody else.
Last week, journalist Otsieno Namwaya felt threatened when he suspected that plain-clothed policemen were following him.
