(FNJ/IFEX) – At 9:30 a.m. (local time) on 16 May 2006, Dinesh Yadav, senior sub editor of Kantipur Publications, was assailed by demonstrators in Kalanki while he was on his way to Sitapaila on a news assignment.
The demonstrators stopped his motorcycle and, when he flashed his press card to prove that he was a journalist, seized the document and tore it up. They also seized his key ring, which contained the key to his motorcycle and other personal keys, and broke the mirror of his motorcycle. They also physically and verbally abused him. Yadav awaited the return of his keys for three hours but they have yet to be returned.
The FNJ strongly condemns the incident and urges all demonstrators to show respect for press freedoms and the free flow of information.
