(FNJ/IFEX) – On 13 August 2006, soldiers mistreated, threatened, and tried to seize the camera of Lahan-based journalist Subhak Mahato, sub-editor of the weekly “Nawa Jagriti”, in the Golbazaar area.
The incident took place when Mahato tried to take pictures of a group of armed Nepalese Army soldiers and Maoist cadres shaking hands. According to Mahato, army personnel abused him and snatched his camera, threatening to delete the photographs.
The FNJ condemns the incident and has asked for an investigation. The FNJ stated that such direct attacks on press personnel, despite the re-establishment of democracy, are intolerable.
