(FNJ/IFEX) – Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) urged political leaders to apologize for their display, on 8 October 2006, of disrespect toward media persons. The incident took place after the summit talks at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar.
When the political leaders exited the venue following the talks, they refused to talk to journalists about the outcomes of the summit. When journalists questioned the leaders, they were pushed aside and addressed rudely.
In a press statement, the FNJ expressed concern and anger over the disrespect shown towards the media during the summit. To disrespect media, who were present to inform the public about this important event, is to disrespect the public.
The FNJ also demanded that the incident be investigated, and that the leaders assume moral responsibility for the incident by apologizing to the journalists involved.
