(FNJ/IFEX) – Dambar Singh Rai, president of FNJ – Khotang branch and a correspondent with “Kantipur Daily”, was threatened by Maoists on 27 October 2006.
Dambar Singh Rai was summoned to Maoist offices in Khotang and, once there, was threatened for disseminating news about the abduction of army officer Dinesh Rai. The news was broadcast on the radio station Kantipur FM on 25 and 26 October. He was threatened by the Maoist district secretary, Ashmita, and district head, Pasang, who accused the reporter of disseminating “false news” and called him an army supporter. Rai had received the information about the abduction from army and police sources.
FNJ has condemned the incident and has urged the Maoists to respect freedom of expression and freedom of the press and not to repeat such incidents in the future.
