(FNJ/IFEX) – Two journalists were assaulted by demonstrators during a bandh (strike) called by the Madheshi Jaanidhikaar Forum (MJF) on 25 January 2007 in the eastern district of Janakpur in Nepal.
The demonstrators roughed-up journalists Tanka Dhakal, BBC correspondent, and Bhim Ghimire, a photojournalist with “Kantipur” daily, and vandalised their motorcycles, when they arrived at the site of the protest.
Meanwhile, a local distributor of “Annapurna Post” daily, Narayan Man Karmacharya, was attacked by demonstrators on the same day. The demonstrators entered his newspaper shop and beat him. They also vandalised his shop.
FNJ has condemned the attacks and urged all parties concerned to respect freedom of the press and of expression. FNJ also urged government to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of journalists.
