Editor of the Vavuniya based monthly magazine “Nilam” shot dead
The editor of the Tamil-language monthly magazine “Nilam” (“the Ground”), Subash Chandraboas, aged 32, married and father of an eight-year-old daughter, was shot dead on 16 April 2007 at about 7:30 p.m (local time) at his residence in Thirunavatkulam, Vavuniya. His daughter confirms that the assassins spoke in Tamil and Sinhala.
Chandraboas was a former student of the first cohort of the College of Journalism and trained with the “Virakesari” newspaper. He contributed to the London-based magazine “Tamil World” as a freelance journalist until March 2007. Chandraboas owned a printing press in Vavuniya and always had a passion for literature.
FMM is appalled by this killing. Although the motive is not clear, FMM fears that this could be another targeted attack on a journalist. Many media personal working in the North and East of the country have been so targeted.
According to newspaper reports, 25 civilians have been killed in Vavuniya during the first 18 days of April 2007.
FMM urges the government to investigate this murder and bring the culprits to justice.
