(HRinfo/IFEX) – On 1 September 2007, HRinfo condemned the disgraceful assault on the office of Mr. Abbas Homamy, the Tunisian human rights activist.
During the early hours of 31 August, Mr. Homamy’s office was subject to acts of vandalism and arson. The incident appears to confirm Mr. Homamy’s accusation that the Tunisian security services are seeking to hinder his reporting on the independence of the judiciary in Tunisia. He has been persecuted incessantly by members of the security services.
Mr. Homamy is one of the most celebrated human rights activists in Tunisia. He is currently the secretary of the Tunisian association for human rights and one of the leading figures in the 18 October movement. He was also a leader of the November 2005 strike demanding respect for basic freedoms.
HRinfo stands hand-in-hand with Tunisian human rights organizations to call upon the Tunisian government to launch an immediate investigation into this incident and to prosecute the perpetrators.
