(Mizzima/IFEX) – Fifteen youth members of the opposition political party, the National League for Democracy, arrested for marching to party leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s residence, were released from police investigation camps after two weeks in detention.
The youths were arrested on 27 May 2008, the 18th anniversary of the day the party posted a landslide victory in a democratic election in 1990. They were walking to the home of the detained opposition leader on University Avenue in Rangoon and were holding aloft banners which read: “Free. . Free. . Aung San Suu Kyi” and “We need. . . immediate aid”.
Party spokesperson Nyan Win told Mizzima, “I received information that they were released at 9 p.m. on 9 June but I have not seen any of them in the office”.
He added that all 15 youth members were detained in Aung Tha Pyay detention camp and released simultaneously.
