(IRFS/IFEX) – On 11 August 2008, two of the most popular websites in Azerbaijan, http:// www.day.az/ and http://www.ans.az/, were hacked.
“Our site was attacked three times by Russian hackers, but every time we were able to repel the attacks,” Anspress.com chief editor Aytan Safarova told IRFS. According to Safarova, the Russians are trying to create an information blockade in connection with the events occurring in Georgia. “Most Georgian websites have crashed,” said Safarova. “But day.az and our website continue to disseminate information about Georgia. And our correspondent is sending information about the military operations from Georgia. The Russians probably don’t like this.”
In contrast to anspress.com, day.az did crash on 11 August. In an interview with Radio Liberty, the website’s chief editor, Elnur Baimov, said that on the day the Russia-Georgia conflict began, 8 August, the attacks on day.az also started.
On 11 August, day.az crashed at 4:30 p.m. (local time); however, accessibility was restored at 6:20 p.m.
