(JED/IFEX) – Global TV station manager Daudet Lukombo was transferred to Kinshasa’s main prison (Centre Pénitentiaire et de Rééducation de Kinshasa, CPRK) on 18 September 2008 after seven days in police detention. Lukombo was arrested on 12 September following a raid on the privately-owned Kinshasa station.
Following his 15 September hearing, Lukombo was charged with “inciting rebellion” and held for 48 hours in the police detention centre commonly known as “Kin Mazière”, before being transferred to a holding cell at the public prosecutor’s office in Kinshasa/Gombe.
On 19 September, Lukombo appeared before a judge in the CPRK’s council chambers to determine the legality of his detention. At the same time, arrest warrants were issued for journalist Neve Natasha Makengele and cameraman Fanfan Koko for covering a press conference by MP Né Mwanda Nsemi. The pair also face charges of “inciting rebellion”.
According to information obtained at the public prosecutor’s offices, Lukombo’s release appears to be conditioned on the surrender of Makengele and Koko, who have gone into hiding to avoid arrest and for reasons of personal safety after receiving anonymous death threats.
