(RSF/IFEX) – Reporters Without Borders is shocked that a relative of Wang Rongqing, the jailed editor of a pro-democracy magazine, was prevented from visiting him in hospital on 10 February 2009 although he is in very poor health. “The authorities are breaking the law by not allowing prisoners of conscience their right to family visits,” Reporters Without Borders said. “We urge the government to allow Wang’s relatives to visit him in hospital without delay.”
One of Wang’s relatives told Reporters Without Borders that he went to the hospital in Hangzhou (the eastern province of Zhejiang) where Wang is being held, but officials prevented him from going to Wang’s room on the grounds that it was forbidden to visit hospitalised prisoners. The dissident’s health does not seem to be improving but his right to visits seems to have been suspended indefinitely. His family has not been allowed to visit him, in jail or in hospital, since his arrest in June 2008.
