(PPF/IFEX) – A journalist with a local television channel in Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, was abducted and beaten by four armed law enforcement personnel on 20 November 2007. The kidnappers, after abducting and severely beating him, dumped him on a side street and threatened him with dire consequences if he reported the matter to anybody.
Press reports quoting a family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Khurram Hashmi, a reporter for Aaj television station, was covering the arrests and police baton charge on journalists outside the Karachi Press Club, when four armed men in a car with tinted windows pounced on him, bundled him into the car and drove him to an unknown location. There he was subjected to brutal interrogation for several hours and was hit on his knees and backbone with clubs. Later, the security personnel put him back into the car and dumped him on the side of a road. A taxi driver who saw him lying on the ground took Hashmi home.
