Abducted journalist Nadaraja Guruparan released
Sooriyan FM news director, Nadaraja Guruparan, was released by his abductors around midnight on 29 August 2006.
He was abducted on his way to work from his home, south of Colombo, in the early morning hours of 29 August.
Journalists’ organisations and civil society activists held a lunch-hour picketing campaign on the same day, demanding his immediate release. International journalists and press freedom organisations issued statements condemning the abduction and emphasising the government’s duty to ensure journalists’ safety.
The government of Sri Lanka and political parties also condemned the abduction and demanded his immediate release.
Electronic media in Sri Lanka played a vital role in getting him released by covering the abduction and the campaign for his release throughout the day.
