(WiPC/IFEX) – On 30 March 1999, PEN issued an action on reports of the
killing of editor Baton Haxhiu and four others, among them two writers.
International PEN has
been informed that while the death of Baton Haxhiu can be confirmed, there
are now questions about the accuracy of reports of the deaths of the others.
**Updates IFEX alert of 30 March 1999**
The death of Baton Haxhiu was well reported by a variety of sources. The
names of the others killed with him were supplied by Nato, using sources in
Kosovo. This information is now under question.
International PEN’s Writers in Prison Committee advises to continue
protesting the death of Baton Haxhiu as recommended in its action, but to
discontinue appeals on behalf of Teki Dervishi and Din Mehmeti in the hope
that they are safe.
