16 AJI MEMBERS AND ONE AJI STAFFER STILL MISSING IN BANDA ACEH
The disastrous earthquake and tsunami, which hit eight Asian and seven African countries on December 26, 2004, is estimated to have claimed more than 80.000 lives. According to the Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Health, it has been estimated that at least 45.000 people were killed in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.
AJI, an organization of journalists in Indonesia affiliated with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), has members in the affected areas, including 11 colleagues in Lhokseumawe and another 25 in Banda Aceh, as well as a security guard for the AJI office in Banda Aceh. AJI members in Jakarta also have relatives in Aceh.
Currently, AJI is monitoring the situation of its members and their families. Based on the latest reports received, all of AJI’s members in Lhokseumawe are safe, while in Banda Aceh only nine members have been confirmed alive and 17 are still missing.
