In a letter to Interior Minister Yuri Kravtchenko, RSF expressed its concern about the decision by Ukrainian authorities to expel Jed Sunden, American publisher of the “Kyiv Post”, Kiev’s English-language weekly. “We ask for an honest explanation for this decision,” wrote RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard.
According to the information collected by RSF, on Tuesday 11 April 2000, Sunden was returning to his Kiev residence from Turkey when he was detained by border police at the Borispol international airport. Though he has lived in Ukraine for a number of years, he was informed that he was not authorised to enter the country. No official reason has been given for the expulsion. The publisher has allegedly been barred from Ukraine for one year.
The English-language independent weekly “Kyiv Post” has been published since 1995. The newspaper regularly publishes articles which are critical of the slowness of reforms, corruption and the bureaucracy in Ukraine.
