(IPYS/IFEX) – Hector Ricardo Faisal Fracolossi, the legal representative of
the Association for the Defense of the Truth (Asociacion Pro Defensa de La
Verdad,
APRODEV), is to appear in courtroom no. 20 of the Criminal Court on 23 July
1999 to face Judge Arturo Vilchez Requejo. Faisal will present his case
concerning the allegations of slander pending against him, which have been
presented by a group of journalists, including the director of “La
Republica” newspaper, Gustavo Mohme Llona, and businessman Baruch Ivcher.

During this hearing, each party’s legal representatives will present their
views. Over a ten-day period, the judge will hear arguments and will render
a judgment thereafter. Each party will have only ten minutes to present
their cases orally. In the meantime, IPYS has learned that Faisal has asked
the court to divide the case against him into separate, individual cases.
As IPYS has explained, Faisal had been charged on 15 April with distributing
slanderous messages via the Internet against seven Peruvian journalists who
investigated illegal government and military activities. These slanderous
messages were also aimed at opposition politicians and other journalists.
Journalistic reports have demonstrated a link between APRODEV and the
National Intelligence Services (Servicio de Inteligencia Nacional, SIN).
