(IPYS/IFEX) – The legal representative of the Association for the Defense of
the Truth (Asociacion Pro Defensa de la Verdad, APRODEV), Argentinian
citizen Héctor Ricardo Faisal Fracalossi, was summoned by provisional judge
Arturo Vílchez Requejo to appear in front of the 20th Lima Criminal Court on
9 June 1999, and was warned that he could be taken there by force.
**Updates IFEX alerts of 28 May, 21 May, 17 May, 20 April and 8 April 1999
and 2 December 1998**
Faisal has to respond to charges that he has been posting articles on the
Association’s Internet page, defaming and maligning the editor of “La
República” newspaper, Gustavo Mohme Llona, the newspaper’s investigative
journalists, Ángel Páez, Fernando Rospigliosi and Edmundo Cruz, journalists
Cecilia Valenzuela and Luis Iberico, and businessman Baruch Ivcher.
Faisal failed to respond to the previous two subpoenas. If he fails to
appear again, the judge could choose to order the police to locate him,
capture him and bring him to court to testify.
APRODEV’s counsel is currently embroiled in other cases in addition to the
one the 20th Criminal Court is dealing with. There are two cases pending
investigation by the 47th and 16th Courts, on charges brought forth by
Ivcher, Iberico and Valenzuela; and by member of congress Javier Diez
Canseco. Furthermore, a request for Faisal’s extradition, accusing him of
having threatened and coerced various persons, was presented to the 41st
Argentinian National Criminal Court. Finally, INTERPOL has been searching
for Faisal for at least nine months, according to information published in
the 1 June edition of a local newspaper.
