(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to the head of the army Education Department, General Eliezer Stern, RSF protested the suspension of the Israeli Army weekly “BeMahaneh”. Robert Ménard, the organisation’s secretary-general, asked the general to “reconsider this decision.” “We are amazed that the Israeli Army is punishing a publication for providing a profile of a homosexual colonel when the army itself acknowledges admitting homosexuals among its ranks,” he stated.
According to information obtained by RSF, General Stern ordered the suspension of the Israeli army weekly “BeMahaneh” for several weeks. According to an army spokesperson, “articles published in the newspaper (on 4 May 2001) did not correspond to the army’s norms.” An article published in the issue gave a profile of a homosexual reserve colonel.
