(ARTICLE 19/IFEX) – The following is a 14 March 2001 ARTICLE 19 press release:
Belarus Freedom of Expression News Online
In order to increase awareness about abuses of freedom of expression in Belarus, and to provide an overview of the trends in Government suppression of the non-state media, ARTICLE 19 has set up a new web page with a regularly updated Bulletin. The aim is to document the numerous examples of violations of freedom of expression, and in particular media freedom, which take place regularly in Belarus and which often go unreported internationally.
ARTICLE 19 currently has a staff member based in Belarus who is actively monitoring the freedom of expression environment. The Belarus Bulletin provides a regularly updated online survey of all the events relating to freedom of expression in Belarus which ARTICLE 19 has observed or been informed about.
For ease of reference, the abuses are divided into the following categories:
* Warnings
* Tax Inspections
* Access to official information
* Printing
* Distribution
* Electronic Media
* Developments in Government and Law
* Information on Health of Head of State
* The disappearance of ORT’s Dmitri Zavadsky
The page can be found in the programmes/europe section of ARTICLE 19’s website:
