(RSF/IFEX) – In a 7 September 2000 letter to Prime Minister and Interior Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis, RSF expressed “its concern after the explosives attack on Haitian national (public) television”. The organisation asked that a “thorough inquiry be undertaken into this attack in order to identify and punish the perpetrators”. Robert Ménard, RSF’s secretary-general, noted that on 3 April, Jean Dominique, director of Radio Haiti Inter and a political commentator famous for his consistent commitment to democracy, was assassinated by unknown persons (see IFEX alerts of 18, 7, 5 and 4 April 2000).
According to information obtained by RSF, on Tuesday 5 September at 3 a.m. (local time), unknown persons threw an explosive device into the yard of the building that houses Haiti’s national television station. The explosion caused slight material damage. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
