(JED/IFEX) – On 22 May 2006, the Attorney General’s office requested a three-year suspended prison sentence with no parole and US$1,000 fine for the director of the Kinshasa-published tri-weekly “Le Journal” and the supplement “Pool Malebo”, Patrice Booto, during the Peace Tribunal proceedings in Kinshasa/Assossa.
The case is now in deliberation and a judgement is expected for 29 May 2006.
During the public hearing, the parties asked to reopen debate given that the case had been previously deliberated by the State Security Court (CSE). After three hours of discussion, the tribunal decided that there was no basis on which to reopen the debate but that the verbal statements would be taken into account in the CSE hearings.
