On 13 July 1996, the government’s Press and Publications Council
(Conseil de la presse et des publications) ordered the closure of
the Dar al Ahila publishing house. Dar al Ahila publishes the
private daily “Al Rai al Akhar” and the apolitical triweekly paper
“Al Majalis”. The Council said the two papers published “false
information and incitement to belittle the country’s cultural
policy” (“fausses informations et des incitations a minimiser
l’orientation culturelle du pays”) — allegations based on the
newspapers’ reports on an increase in the price of flour and on
statements attributed to the chairman of the Federation of Trade
Unions (Federation des syndicats de travailleurs). The Press and
Publications Council also accused Dar al Ahila of changing its
shareholding, thereby “leading the press to disruptive practices
which threaten the security and stability of the country.”
Recommended Action
Send appeals to Sudanese authorities:
