(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to President Mohamad Khatami, RSF protested the jamming of the Persian-language radio programmes of the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). RSF also asked the president to “do everything possible to end this jamming”. The organisation recalled that in the course of 1999, eight newspapers were banned, five of which were of a reformist nature. Eight journalists were arrested; three of them remain imprisoned.
According to information collected by RSF, the Iranian authorities have been jamming the Persian-language radio programmes of the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and the BBC since early February 2000. These stations’ programmes were either rendered inaudible or other radio programmes were broadcast on the same frequency. These measures have been introduced in the lead up to legislative elections scheduled for 18 February.
