(RSF/IFEX) – RSF has welcomed President Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir’s 20 July 2005 decision lifting the ban on “Khartoum Monitor”, an English-language daily. This follows the government’s 10 July annoucement that it was ending censorship.
“The end of [the ban on] this newspaper, which follows the lifting of the state of emergency, seems to herald a new era for the Sudanese press,” the organisation said.
“Khartoum Monitor” editor William Ezechiel said the offical lifting of the ban would not be complete until he appeared before the National Press Council.
The newspaper was banned on 12 June for publishing an interview in which a former government minister accused the government of practicing forms of slavery.
